I won’t be able to buy a first gen Tacoma anytime soon. I feel bad every day about the one I had but let go away (bought for $1400, sold for $2750, show me another Tacoma 4x4 for that cheap). These D21s are pretty cheap, even the later airbag equipped ones (I like airbags in a DD).

These typically go for about $2500-$4000 in good condition with 4x4. How much do you think I could sell my 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 2wd (161,000 miles, clean body and title) for?

D21 is the correct option.

They’re slow as molasses but are tough, durable reliable little things.

No stranger to slow.

Slant 6 Dart, 4 cylinder Tacoma (admittedly much faster than my friend’s 22re truck), 2.5l e34 (a real dog), and a 3.0 Ranger. I know the Nissan is probably slower than all of these, but speed has never really been a priority for me.

The 5.7L Hemi has spoiled me so. I love effortless merging + passing

These look better to me as time goes on.

Oh lawdy! If they’d only make trucks like those again.

I’m planning on getting a Ranger for Dad soon and honestly they’re all over the damn map price wise. There’s no rhyme or reason to the pricing at all.

Detail the heck out of it and ask as high as you can.

I’m never really in a hurry, and when I am I don’t have enough power to get into too much trouble.

When I drive my parent’s cars I think it’s weird when Flight of the Valkyries doesn’t play in my head when I pass or merge onto the highway.

My car aesthetic is Millennium Falcon hunk of junk. It’s not pretty, but it gets the job done.

Had a 1990 bare bones 4cyl 5spd std cab, no rear bumper and loved it - still miss it. It had a little more room and a little more power than the toyota of the time, but after a couple hundred thousand miles, hitting a deer and getting stolen/recovered, the paint was coming off, it needed more work in brakes than it was worth, the tailgate kept jamming and it only fit 2 people...

I bought it from my neighbor for $1200 and added brakes, a coolant hose and a roll on bed liner. I’m sure I could get 3k easy if I waited long enough. Maybe 4k if I get lucky.

Effortless merging. And having the power to pass people? Where’s the adventure in that?

My friend had one, it drove like garbage, but it was beat to hell. Suspension travel seemed to happen along a diagonal perpendicular to the direction you were going. Stupid easy to work on though, I replaced the drums on the rear axle and fixed the lights for him.

I’d hate to be out a car during the summer though. I could probably bike around town and take the bus but Boone is really hilly.

The only real problem with the D21 is that they rust like they were made in the 60s. Bizarre spots on them rot out, too.

Yeah, a lot of Japanese trucks from the 80s and early 90s had that issue

Good luck finding one that isn’t beat to shit. I see a 2wd every couple months. I can’t remember the last time I saw a 4wd version.

Lol, i bought a 1989 D21 2wd about two months ago for $800. It is literally the most beat to hell car ever. But it has potential, and is easy as dicks to work on. I just got done painting my rims tonight actually. If you want to buy a Hardbody, just be prepared to do alotta work to it. Also don’t buy a Hardbody made before 1990. The 1986.5-1989 D21's have the shit-tastic Z24i engine, while the 1990-1997 have the KA24E, which is what you’ll want, less you can find one with a V6.

I had one, it was pretty good, then the computer died and I think it used the same as an Altima and I swapped it. Then I had a 2001 Frontier 4 door, I really like those years of the Frontier, great clearance on the 4X4, the manual is a good one.

I know most of the first-gen Tacomas around where I live (NE Ohio) were bought back because of the frame rust issue. I might see one a week around here. I drive a second-gen 2wd Taco, myself.

Yes. I passed a car with less than 100 HP and is styled like a loaf of bread.

My old one was from the south, so the frame was straight.

with all the air bag crap going on i wouldnt want that air bag in an older car ....

Well no recalls on this one and its not a Takkata so I think it’s fine. Honestly even if there’s a chance it won’t deploy I’d take it over not having one at all.

Denying the merit of airbags is silly.
